The suspect in the shooting and murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione, is behind bars. But now, some are using AI technology to continue giving him a voice through chatbots.
Graphika spoke with Forbes Magazine this week to share intelligence from Graphika ATLAS on the creation and dissemination of more than a dozen chatbots modeled after the alleged shooter on Character.ai, a popular app for creating AI characters. At the time of publication, Forbes found two of the chatbots were still active. The story was also covered by Futurism.
Some of the chatbots are trained specifically on Mangione's writings and social media posts, while others are built from publicly available information about his background and beliefs. Users are able to converse with the chatbots that emulate Mangione. In some instances, he confesses to the crime and lays out his motivations for committing it or encourages further violence against healthcare executives.
When it comes to the impact of technology being used in this way, Graphika Principal Analyst Cristina López G. noted that “we're still in the infancy of generative AI tools and what they can do for users." She added that “it is very likely that a lot of the use cases that are the most harmful we likely haven't even started to see. We’ve just started to scratch the surface.”
